A practical way to read the table: if the project changes where a wall is, how people exit the building, or where daylight enters, it is interior architecture work. If it changes what the space looks and feels like within a fixed shell, it is interior design. If it changes only the objects in the room, it is decoration. One caveat on titles. In the United States and the United Kingdom, “architect” is a legally protected term. A professional who has not completed architectural licensure generally cannot use it, which is why many firms in those markets describe the same service as architectural interior design or *interior architecture and design*.
Interior Architecture, Internal Architecture, or Indoor Architecture?
Several terms circulate for the same idea, and they are not equally correct. Interior architecture is the standard professional and academic term. Use this one. Internal architecture appears mostly in translated content and in non-English-speaking markets. In English it more commonly refers to the internal structure of a computer system or a piece of software, so it is worth avoiding in a design context. Indoor architecture and inside architecture are informal descriptions rather than recognised terms. No accredited programme or professional body uses them.
Architectural interior design is an industry hybrid, common in the US and UK for the reasons described above. Innenarchitektur is the German equivalent, and it is a protected title. Practising under it requires a qualifying degree and registration with a state chamber of architects.
